Last year friends of ours were going out to the U.S.A. to see their son married. They were also meeting extended members of daughter-in-laws family. Knowing there were 3 wee girls to meet they asked if I could make 3 bears the same but in different tartans. As you can see in the first picture they were a little unsure what sort of creatures they were. They soon worked out that they were Scottish bears though.

Had forgotten to add these pictures (parental approval gained) till I was asked to make another bear for the soon to arrive first child of the best friend of last years groom. It’s always lovely to see pictures of the bears new homes.

Pram quilt
I had these saltire blocks left over from a cot size quilt I was working on and had laid them aside to await inspiration. When I heard of a new addition that friends had, I saw a use for the blocks. Teamed with some designer cashmere/cotton plaid fabric and the addition of a bear applique it made the perfect quilt for a pram or baby carrier. No mistaking this wee ones Nationlity.

Walkabout Crafts Link

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

I used to have a link here to Scottish Crafts website which featured only products made in Scotland.

Over time Emma, who runs the site, expanded into Ireland, Wales and England with their own sites e.g Welsh Crafts.

To provide a more seamless site to the customer she brought us all under the same banner of Walkabout Crafts and has now included crafts from Spain and Iran. From the home page you can shop by gift type, country or shop member. There are all sorts of free things, information and interactive stuff. Basically the same as Scottish Crafts but more.

Whether you are a crafter, a shopper or just curious, pop over and have a browse around. Make a tea or coffee and take the world tour.

Buchanan BearsHere are the Antique Buchanan Bears. Having just been completed while staying in Edinburgh they agreed to sit for a photo before being packed to travel to their new home.

They are together in their new home sitting on a Buchanan tartan rug. Should make for a very colourful corner of the room.

New Cloth Doll

New Cloth Doll
New Cloth Doll

It started with a new product mail from Sarah’s Textile Crafts. She had packs of curly wool in different colours in pre cut lengths.

On looking at them I remembered that I had wanted to make some cloth dolls but had been wondering what I could use for the hair. Suddenly I thought that this might be the answer.

When the wool arrived I immediately thought of the tammy I had knitted some weeks previously which still hadn’t found someone to wear it. This then linked to a tartan skirt and a knitted jacket just seemed to finish the ensemble.

The doll is made in 100% cotton. The tartan is 100% genuine Scottish wool tartan and the tammy and jacket are knitted in 100% lambswool yarn from the New Lanark Mill.
